Read our review of the most recent model. The 2015 Apple MacBook Air 11-inch $899 as tested is all about ultraportability. This year's model gets a modest CPU update from last year's iteration, but while its Editors' Choice-winning stablemate, the 2015 Apple MacBook Air 13-inch, is aimed at pleasing a wider range of users, the 11-inch ultraportable makes a few tradeoffs to become even thinner and lighter. Even so, its Intel Core i5 processor means that it breezes through tasks that would slow an Intel-Core-M-equipped system, and that's on top of its hours of battery life. The MacBook Air 11-inch is a wonderful commuter laptop, and it should be on your short list if you're constantly on the move. Design and FeaturesIf the all-aluminum exterior of the MacBook Air 11-inch looks familiar, that's because the design has basically remained unchanged since 2010. It measures long by wide, and its thickness tapers from inches from the back to inches at the front. The laptop weighs pounds, which is ever-so-slightly heavier than the last year's model pounds. It's significantly smaller and lighter than other ultraportables like the Asus Zenbook UX305FA-ASM1 and the HP EliteBook Folio 1020, although those two are slimmer. The new 12-inch MacBook lays claims to being the most svelte Apple laptop, but it sacrifices I/O ports in favor of shaving off a few millimeters. It should be noted that the MacBook Air 11-inch's Intel Core i5 processor needs a fan to keep itself cool, while the thinner laptops listed above all have Intel Core M processors that don't require active cooling. Similar Products Ports remain unchanged from last year's MacBook Air. On the left side are a headset jack, two microphones, a MagSafe 2 power jack, and a USB port. The right side sports a Thunderbolt 2 port and a second USB port. That's a little sparse, but still far more than the MacBook with its single USB-C port. In comparison, the Asus X305FA and the HP Folio 1020 each offer a wider selection of ports, thanks to their larger side panels. You'll need an adapter cable for HDMI or other display connectors, but the Thunderbolt port works just fine with mini-DisplayPort monitors. Wireless connectivity comes via integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth As with its 13-inch counterpart, the keys on the 11-inch MacBook Air's backlit, chiclet-style keyboard feel excellent, and multitouch gestures work smoothly on the glass-covered trackpad. The trackpad doesn't have the Force-Click capability of the MacBook or the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch, but that feature is still unsupported in most third-party applications. Like all Mac laptops, the Air lacks a touch screen, but given that OS X doesn't support touch gestures, it's certainly not a deal breaker. The 11-inch MacBook Air's largest drawback is its 1,366-by-768-resolution display. The screen is bright and quite legible, but seems cramped in comparison with the Retina Display on the MacBook or any number of Windows laptops with 1080p- or higher-resolution screens, such as the Asus Zenbook UX305FA. That said, you'll still find 1,366-by-768 screens on some ultraportables, like the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e. The system comes with 4GB of RAM, upgradable to 8GB for $100 extra, but only when you order the laptop directly from Apple. That's still enough for multitasking in Mac OS X, but consider upgrading if you like to keep dozens of windows open simultaneously. There's 128GB of flash storage on our base system, which is adequate for day-to-day use, particularly if you supplement that with online cloud storage or an external drive. An upgrade to 256GB of storage, which our review unit from last year had as standard, is available for $200 more. Thankfully, the system is unencumbered by bloatware. The flash storage is PCIe-based, which makes it faster than the SATA-based solid-state drives SSDs and flash storage in older ultraportables. This helped the system boot in only a few seconds and apps to load quickly in testing. The MacBook Air comes with a one-year warranty, which is the same as most midrange Windows laptops. Performance The system is equipped with a Intel Core i5-5250U processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics 6000. Multimedia performance was good, completing the Handbrake test in 2 minutes 49 seconds and our Adobe Photoshop CS6 test in 513. Both scores are faster than the Dell XPS 13 Touch 258 on Handbrake; 554 on CS6 and the Lenovo Yoga 3 14 304 on Handbrake; 516 on CS6. Systems with Intel Core i7 processors, like the Acer Aspire S7-393-7451 and the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 Series 2-in-1 Special Edition Laptop 7352 were predictably quicker in our tests. The MacBook Air was much faster than the Apple MacBook, which scored 339 on the Handbrake test and 624 on Photoshop CS6. Results on the 3D tests were mediocre, but that's to be expected, given the integrated graphics. The laptop should be fast enough for simpler games like Diablo III, but you wouldn't want to run Grand Theft Auto V at Ultra-quality settings. With its 38-watt battery, the MacBook Air 11-inch lasted 11 hours 33 minutes on our rundown test. That's far less than the astounding 1736 of the 13-inch MacBook Air and its larger 54-watt battery, but a much longer runtime than the Acer Aspire S7-393-7451 957. The Air should last throughout a cross-country flight, and have juice left for another work session afterward. Since the 11-inch MacBook Air packs the same memory, processor, and storage as its 13-inch big brother, it's no surprise that the two returned almost identical performance scores save for battery life. If you can handle the larger size and the $100 premium, go for the 13-inch, the extra juice is worth it. ConclusionThe latest 11-inch Apple MacBook Air might be one of the smallest ultraportable laptops on the market, but its powerful Intel Core i5 processor and long-lasting battery life help it stay ahead of its Core-M-equipped rivals. It also offers better connectivity options than the Apple MacBook. Consider buying one if you're replacing a three-year-old or older MacBook Air or Windows ultraportable, but you can probably skip it if you have last year's model. This lightweight ultraportable has the same design, screen and keyboard, with only the processor getting a slight upgrade. Apple also shaved $100 off the price, which, coupled with a great productivity suite, excellent performance and long battery life, makes the MacBook Air a better deal than new to see here. The Air's all-aluminum wedge-shaped design is as slender and sleek as ever, but we're starting to wonder when Apple will update the look of its ultraportable. A thinner bezel or other color options would be notebooks in this size range, such as the Lenovo Yoga and Dell XPS 11, fold back completely, letting you use them as tablets. It's slightly smaller and lighter than the Dell XPS 11 x x inches, pounds and the 12-inch Lenovo ThinkPad X240 12 x x inches, pounds. Naturally, the Air is both larger and heavier than the 10-inch Surface Pro 2, which measures x x inches and weighs pounds with its keyboard and TouchpadClick to EnlargeOne thing that we're thankful hasn't changed on the Air is its excellent keyboard. All too often, key travel and responsiveness are sacrificed in the name of a thin chassis. Not so with the Air. Typing on the black, island-style keys was a pleasure, and we continue to enjoy the bright backlighting. The Mac OS-specific keys above the number row are as useful as the keyboard's travel of 1 mm is on the low side - to 2mm is preferred - its higher-than-average actuation weight of 60 grams helped alleviate the issue. It was much more enjoyable to type on the MacBook Air than it was on the XPS 11 and the Surface Pro 2, whose flat keyboards provide almost no feedback x touchpad on the Air continues to be top-notch, and allowed us to execute a number of multitouch gestures with ease, such as pinch-to-zoom and three- and four-finger swipe. Not to mention, all three competitors have touch screens, while the MacBook Air does 293 lux 322 nits, the Air's display is brighter than the ultraportable average of 265 lux, as well as the XPS 11 265 lux. However, the panel falls below the X240 325 lux and the Surface Pro 2 389 lux.The Air doesn't have the most colorful display. It can produce only percent of the sRGB color gamut, which falls below the ultraportable average of 70 percent, as well as the X240's 65 screen's Delta E rating of where numbers closer to 1 are best is a little better than the average of but a little worse than the X240's score of speakers beneath the Air's keyboard were so good that a colleague initially thought we were playing music from a stand-alone speaker. The strings, mids and bass on Pharrell's "Gust of Wind" all sounded full and balanced, and although the Air started vibrating, we didn't notice any distortion when we cranked the volume to the max. Billy Joel's "You May Be Right" sounded a little flat, but John Coltrane's sax on "Say It" came through as sultry as Air hit 79 decibels, as measured from 23 inches away. That's a bit softer than the 83-dB average, as well as the X240 80 dB and the XPS 11 84 dB. However, the Surface Pro 2 was quieter, at 78 streaming a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad measured 79 degrees Fahrenheit, the G and H keys were 89 degrees and the middle of the underside was 87 degrees. All are below 95 degrees, the point at which we consider a notebook to be and WebcamClick to EnlargeLike previous versions of the Air, the updated 2014 model has very few ports just a Thunderbolt port and a USB port on the right, and a second USB port and headphone jack on the left. There's no SD card slot, which is present on the 13-inch Air and is also available on the XPS 11, Surface Pro 2 and Lenovo seems like webcams are getting short shrift on many notebooks these days, so it's good to see that the quality from the Air's HD webcam is as good as ever. When making a FaceTime call, colors and details were crisp and clear, and our face was illuminated to EnlargeOur configuration of the 2014 MacBook Air boasts a Intel Core i5-4260U processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of flash memory. It's a modest boost from last year's model, which had a Intel Core i5-4250U CPU but is more than enough to keep ahead of the Geekbench 3, which measures overall performance, the Air's score of 5,392 was more than 1,000 points higher than the ultraportable average of 4,218. The Lenovo X240, which has a Core i5-4200U CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB solid-state drive SSD, scored 3,317. The Surface Pro 2, which has the same processor but 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, scored 5,138. The XPS 11, which has a GHz Core i5-4210Y CPU, scored 3, Air booted Mac OS X Mavericks in 14 seconds, the same amount of time as it took the Surface Pro 2 to boot Windows 8; the X240 took 13 seconds, while the XPS 11 took 11 laptop's 128GB of flash memory duplicated of multimedia in 19 seconds, for a blistering rate of 268 MBps. That's more than 100 MBps faster than the category average MBps, the X240 MBps and the Surface Pro 2 MBps. The XPS 11 came in at 196 our spreadsheet test, which times how long it takes to pair 20,000 names and addresses in OpenOffice, the Air's time of 5 minutes and 33 seconds was faster than the average 753 and the XPS 11 713 but slower than the X240 522 and the Surface Pro 2 511.GraphicsClick to EnlargeThe Intel HD Graphics 5000 GPU in the Air will suffice for playing casual games and some mainstream titles on lower settings. On "World of Warcraft," the Air averaged 48 frames per second with the effects set to Good; that's better than the category average of 33 fps, as well as the Surface Pro 2 46 fps, the Lenovo X240 31 fps and the XPS 11 28 fps.However, when we increased the effects to their max, the Air dropped to an unplayable 27 fps. In fact, with the brightness set to 100 nits 63 percent brightness on the Air, the notebook lasted 9 hours and 19 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test. That's about an hour and a half longer than the category average, and better than similarly sized 10 Laptops with the Longest Battery LifeFor comparison, last year's MacBook Air lasted 853 with the brightness set to 40 percent the setting for our older battery test. The Lenovo X240 lasted 740 with its three-cell battery but an epic 2028 with its 6-cell extended battery, while the Surface Pro 2 lasted 802.
